Legend of Polygonatum
Those who are not close to immortals cannot be doctors, and those who are not close to Buddhas cannot be doctors. These two sentences are about the following story.
At the Peach Banquet of a certain year, Zixia, a fairy close to the Queen Mother, was sent down to the mortal world by the Jade Emperor because she accidentally ate the “Sun Grass” of the Jade Emperor.
Zixia was born in a family surnamed Huang in a mountain village on the southern foot of Mount Tai. The Huang family has been doctors for three generations and is known as the family of pharmacists. They are very kind and friendly. When Mrs. Huang was about to give birth, auspicious clouds surrounded the Huang family, beautiful birds sang, and the withered flowers bloomed again. All the villagers said: The Huang family will definitely produce a noble person. When the child was born, it turned out to be a girl, holding a small grass in her mouth and holding a handful of “beans” in her hands, so she was named Huang Xiaocao. Huang Yaoshi was nearly fifty years old and was very happy to have a daughter. Seeing the auspicious sign from heaven, the little girl was born with grass in her mouth and beans in her hands, which was unheard of. He was very surprised, so he planted the beans in the little girl’s hand on the hillside behind the house. Ten years later, although Huang Xiaocao was a teenager, his height was almost the same as that of an adult, and his intelligence was even more extraordinary. He followed his father to learn medicine, and he could draw inferences from one thing. His ability to identify medicinal herbs was far beyond his father’s reach. One day, a female patient came to the house, unconscious, coughing up blood, and had been suffering from tuberculosis for a long time and had entered the critical stage. After the diagnosis, Huang’s father looked embarrassed, so he told his family to prepare for the funeral. Xiaocao came back for a follow-up visit and told her father: Stay still. He quickly walked to the hillside, dug up the fairy grass with a hoe, brought it into the room, washed it, chopped it, steamed it, and poured the soup into the patient’s mouth. After a while, the patient woke up and could speak. Three days later, she could get out of bed and walk, and three months later, she was as healthy as before. Since then, the Huang family has become famous, and people from a radius of 500 miles have come to ask for medical treatment, and all of them have recovered. On the other hand, a tribal leader in the south gave birth to a daughter, named “Nu Wa”. The girl yearned for the sun since she was young, and begged her father many times to take her to see the sun rise, but her father refused. Once, she secretly went to the seaside to row a boat to the east, encountered a fierce wave and drowned. Her soul did not disperse, and she turned into a bird that could make a “Jingwei” sound, and brought branches and stones from Xishan Street to fill the sea, day after day, wind and rain. The Queen Mother was touched by her sincerity, so she sent Gonggong to subdue the fierce waves to calm the resentment in Nu Wa’s heart. She also turned into a kind old man to enlighten her, saying: “I know you are thinking of the sun, but except for your father, no one else can get close to it. The great god Kuafu chased the sun and died of thirst on the road. Now there is a fairy grass on Mount Tai, named the grass of the sun. Seeing the grass is like seeing the sun, which is enough to fulfill your wish. Go.” After hearing this, Jingwei immediately flew to Mount Tai. She turned into a woman and became good friends with Huang Xiaocao. Together they took care of the fairy grass and benefited the world. Many years later, the heaven was robbed and the plague spread on earth. At first, Xiaocao and Jingwei traveled all over Mount Tai, collecting herbs and teaching people to make soup medicine, saving many people. As time went by, patients from far away flocked to Mount Tai. The herbs on Mount Tai were exhausted, and the fairy grass was gone. Huang Xiaocao was heartbroken when she saw the innocent lives passed away. She was helpless and turned her body into thousands of fairy grasses, which grew all over Mount Tai and the surrounding hillsides. The devil secretly cast a spell, causing a severe drought in the world, and it was difficult for the fairy grass to grow. Jingwei thought: Sister Xiaocao sacrificed herself for the people, how could I stay out of it. So she turned into a bird and drew water from the Yangtze River to Mount Tai to irrigate the fairy grass. She kept running back and forth day and night, and when the fairy grass was about to be harvested, Jingwei bird died of exhaustion in the field. The people of the world were saved, but Huang Xiaocao and Jingwei passed away one after another. People wept bitterly, calling to the sky and praying to the earth: “Come back, lifesaver, come back, savior of mankind”. To show their merits, they took one character from each of their names, “Huang” and “Jing”, and named this fairy grass “Huangjing”. Later, the three realms were restored to order. The Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother appreciated their dedication and good deeds. They heard the voices of the world calling out, which were overwhelming, one after another, during the day and at night. The Jade Emperor used the energy of the shouting of the world to perform magic to restore the flesh of Zixia and Nuwa. He also ordered the two to return to the fairy class.
